Pope Francis Dies at 88 Following Stroke and Cardiac Arrest

April 21, 2025 – Vatican City
Pope Francis, the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, passed away early Monday morning at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest, the Vatican announced.

The pontiff, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, had recently been hospitalized for double pneumonia but surprised many with a cheerful appearance on Easter Sunday, waving to crowds from the popemobile in St. Peter’s Square. His sudden death, just weeks after being discharged from a 38-day hospital stay, came as a shock.

“With deep sorrow, I share the news of our Holy Father Francis’ passing,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a televised announcement. Vatican medical officials confirmed the pope had fallen into a coma before his death, and cited additional health concerns including diabetes and high blood pressure.

Preparations are now underway for the pope’s funeral, with his body expected to be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica as early as Wednesday so the faithful may pay their respects. While a specific funeral date has yet to be confirmed, Vatican sources suggest it will likely take place later in the week.

Tributes have poured in from around the globe. Leaders from countries as diverse as Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and Brazil praised Francis’ compassion, humility, and dedication to social justice. Argentina and Brazil declared national mourning in his honor.

Known as “the pope of the poor,” Francis spent much of his papacy focused on inclusion, reform, and advocacy for marginalized communities. He was also an outspoken critic of war and conflict, recently calling for peace in Gaza during his Easter message.

Despite his often unconventional approach, Francis remained a deeply influential figure, both within the Church and globally. He opted not to reside in the lavish papal apartments, choosing instead simpler accommodations. Throughout his tenure, he worked toward financial transparency and elevated women to leadership roles in the Vatican.

However, his time as pope was not without controversy. He faced pushback from traditionalists who opposed his progressive direction, and from reformers who believed he hadn’t gone far enough. His handling of the clergy sexual abuse crisis also drew criticism.

Pope Francis’ death marks the end of a transformative era. He appointed nearly 80% of the cardinals eligible to elect his successor, which could significantly influence the direction of the Church for years to come. The conclave to elect a new pope is expected to be convened within the next few weeks.

In a break from tradition, Pope Francis requested to be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome rather than at St. Peter’s. A canonization ceremony for Carlo Acutis, originally scheduled for April 27, has been postponed.

Francis is remembered for his global outreach, his message of unity, and his deep empathy for humanity.
